CMS Math Camps

A stated purpose of the CMS is:

To champion mathematics through initiatives that explain, promote and increase the general understanding of mathematics, provide extracurricular opportunities for students, and encourage partnerships with corporate, government and not-for-profit agencies.

One initiative in providing extracurricular opportunities for students is the operation of the CMS National and Regional Math Camps. These camps occur at various locations across the country. The activities in the camps, grade level of the students and eligibility for participation vary from camp to camp.

National Math Camps

The National Camp is designed primarily for younger Canadian students with at least two years remaining in high school and with the potential to compete at the mathematical olympiad level. Participation in the National Camp is by invitation only.

Students from grades 8 to 10 will be invited to the National Camp.

The selection will be made primarily from the results of the annual Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge (a Canadian Mathematical Society competition), as well as other contest information and recommendations from Regional Camp Directors. Normally at most two students from a particular school will be invited.

Resources

For participants:

  • ATOM: The booklets in the series, A Taste of Mathematics, are published by the Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS). They are designed as enrichment materials for high school students with an interest in and aptitude for mathematics. Some booklets in the series will also cover the materials useful for mathematical competitions at national and international levels.
  • Mathematical Olympiads Correspondence Program (a.k.a. Olymon): The MOCP is a correspondence service for Canadian students who wish to practice and improve mathematical problem-solving. A new set of questions is available several times per year and students are asked to send in their solutions. The best solutions are published later on this site. It is aimed at senior level high school students.
  • Crux Mathematicorum with Mathematical Mayhem: This CMS journal is an internationally respected source of unique and challenging mathematical problems. It has been referred to as "the best problem solving journal in the world." There are eight 64-page issues published each year.
  • IMO Training Camps: These are training camps offered by the CMS for the Canadian Team selected to compete at the next International Mathematical Olympiad.

For organizers:

  • Math Camp Model: This 1999 document gives suggestions for conducting a math camp sponsored by the CMS.
  • 2009 Update to the Math Camp Model.
  • Sample photo release form: Organizers require permission from students or their parents in order to take photos of them. Here is a sample.
  • E-mail the CMS Math Camps national coordinator (camps-coordinator@cms.math.ca).
